i love to cook…

i absolutely love to cook but i actually have very little talent.  i make up for my lack of talent with a very eager nature.   if i see a recipe that looks amazing, i can’t wait to try it.  sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.  i’m also a terrible food blogger!  usually, i’m half way through preparing the meal when i remember that i would have liked to blog it or i forget to take the picture before it’s all mixed.  many things make me a bad blogger.

take last night for instance….

i made one of my favorite dishes – baked salmon with steamed green beans, baby spinach salad and seasoned potatoes.  i probably make this once a week but i have yet to remember to blog it.  my family LOVES this meal and i think it’s super healthy.

i do wish i had more talent but i guess that’s the way it goes.  i follow the recipes and cookbooks and many food blogs and i turn out some great meals for my family.  sometimes, i can even tweak it a bit to make more to my family’s tastes.

hatin’ chocolate and dislike sweets…

i guess i’m in the extreme minority.  i can’t stand chocolate and as for other sweets, i could leave them and not be sorry.  give me a bag of something savory any day and i would be much happier!

i’ve hated chocolate for as long as i can remember.  my mom used to pack my christmas stocking and easter baskets with white chocolate.  white chocolate was my favorite when i was a kid but even then i wasn’t enamored of sweets.

when kids are eating their school lunch, it’s usually the one meal a day away from their parents.  what is the obvious way to do it?  dessert first and then the rest.  i did the same but not for the same reasons as the rest of the kids.  the desert was my least favorite part of the meal so i would eat it first to get it out of the way.  (this was back in the days of eat everything on your plate so i didn’t even consider leaving it.) i could then move on to the yummy savory foods.

i did make the exception for the apple crisp…the cooks in the tri-point cafeteria made the best ever.  i probably liked it because it wasn’t that sweet…more in the tart range.  that’s a bit off my topic though.

i used to like vanilla ice cream…boring i know!  again with the hatred of chocolate.  now i don’t even desire ice cream.  the way to my heart is with a bag of lay’s salt and vinegar chips!  why is there never a red and white bag of chips with a bow on it for valentines.  :)

floods and doctors…

today started out rather ordinary…except for the fact that i woke up at 2:30 am. other than that it was the usual. take michael to work, come home, take the boys to school, grocery store and laundry. same old, same old.

fast forward 5 or so hours…the rain picks up outside, the wind is howling, it looks dark in the sky. the next thing i know, the emergency broadcast system comes on tv with tornado warnings! i thought we were well away from that once we left the midwest. i was sorely mistaken. thankfully, it never got anywhere close to me or the boys for that matter but michael was closer to the projected path. again, thankfully it didn’t happen near him either. the rain came down fast and furiously. it was torrential at times. kaitlyn called and told me she had hail in her neighborhood! our side/front lawn quickly become a river and the backyard a pool.

our in ground pool...

as quickly as all of that horrible weather whipped up…it was gone and we had sunny skies again. i guess that a california winter for you! i worried about picking the boys up from school in this mess but by the time i needed to pick them, it was fine.

i asked michael what he wanted for dinner this morning and jokingly, he was exact in his request – pork chops, au gratin potatoes and asparagus. so i gave him just that…it was fantastic! i make dinner early on dr. appt. days and the boys and i eat early.

we have our chiropractor appt. every tues., thurs. and sat. so after i picked him up from work we went right over. i asked the dr. h. if i could snap a couple of pics and he was ok with it. (thank goodness he was back from his seminar! i would not have had another adjustment from the other guy…awful.) i’ve been getting pretty bummed out about the whole back situation and contemplated letting tonight be my last adjustment. michael said give it another month so we’ll see. it usually feels a bit better after dr. h adjusts it but it goes right back to hurting. the neck is so much better but still needs a lot of work. i’m not sure how much he can do for me but we’ll see.

anyway…i tried to get some decent pics but the room is so small…i may have to try again thursday.

i forgot to mention that somehow…someone hacked my facebook account. i think someone has gotten ahold of my croatian blackberry and was able to access it from there. they left some rather nasty status updates which left me terribly embarassed. i figure it is the croatian blackberry because they also uploaded a photo of a dinner that michael and i had for our anniversary in 2008 which was on that phone. jerks! i hope they burn in hell.

coakley lost in mass. i knew she would…it was just too dire to pull out a win. i don’t think it’s a referendum on obama for being too far left. i think it’s a referendum on obama not being left enough. he left his supporters standing dumbfounded to try and appease the right. it just can’t work that way. he better redirect his focus or he will a landslide loss in nov. and huge democratic apathy.

my days are pretty boring and routine but it is fun to talk about all the small stuff!

happy 15th anniversary…

michael and i are celebrating our 15th anniversary today. the last 15 years have been wonderful, yet challenging. we had many amazing experiences and a few scary experiences but i wouldn’t change it for the world.

we are in the midst of many new things here in california so no trip away this year for our anniversary. we decided on dinner and a movie this year.

kingsfishhouse

IMG00086we’ve driven by this seafood restaurant often and i’ve been wanting to try it so this seemed like the perfect occasion to do so. it’s called king’s fish house. it has a great atmosphere and excellent food. michael had the wild british columbian dungeness crab platter and i had the wild alaskan red king crab platter. the food was absolutely amazing. i was stuffed by the crab alone but the sides were excellent so i tried to force as much down as i could (the true american way). i had a couple of gin and tonics which complimented the meal perfectly. because it was our anniversary, the restaurant gave us a free dessert. we chose the key lime pie which was perfection! after dinner we went to see the movie ‘all about steve’ with sandra bullock and bradley cooper. it was very cute! i thought it would be stupid and just another silly comedy but this one, though silly, was good!

here’s to another 15 and another 15 and another 15!!

a few days in the chicago area…

michael hadn’t seen his family for awhile so he thought it would be nice to stop off in chicago in between zagreb and irvine.

we were able to pack a lot in during this little trip. we arrived at o’hare on monday afternoon. we found our van and were able to get loaded (4 carts worth of luggage) and on our way fairly quickly once we were past the customs and baggage areas.

when we arrived in bradley at the busby’s house we were greeted by mr. and mrs. busby, stacy, kaleb and aiden. we hadn’t seen the boys in 4 years and stacy even longer (i couldn’t tell you the last time!) we settled our junk in and then had a great dinner of hamburgers and hotdogs from the grill. after that we just took it easy for the rest of the night.

on tuesday, stacy and the boys had to go home since brent was leaving town. michael had an appointment to see his old colleagues at aventis. the kids and i just hung around at the house. mrs. busby had to go back to chicago that night for work on wednesday.

on wednesday we went to chicago for a quick tour. we saw mrs. busby’s apartment first and then headed downtown. by the time we got there it was around noon. the kids and i were all starving. we were also all dying for chinese. we asked mr. busby where a good chinese restaurant was…he didn’t know. but as fate would have it, michael turned around and lo and behold, we were standing in front of hot woks-cool sushi. we were thrilled! (mr. busby had suggested soup and sandwich which i wasn’t in the mood for.)

i think everyone was happy with their food with the exception of mr. busby. michael ordered some really nice crab rangoon and spring rolls for us all to share as a starter. he ordered a wonderful beef with broccoli as his main. kaity ordered a bento box which was very good. thomas, tyler and i had a sushi selection which came with soup.

the "inedible" spicy chicken salad mr. busby had a spicy chicken salad as his main course. he was extremely unhappy with it to say the least and said that it was inedible. he couldn’t quite describe why though… michael tried it and said it was alright. he said he tasted something that might have been coconut milk but it wasn’t horrible to him. needless to say, i don’t think mr. busby was thrilled with my choice.

afterward we walked over to millennium park to see “the bean”. i have wanted to see it for awhile. it’s really pretty neat. i think the guide said it was 35 tons of steel.

the family under "the bean"

there happend to be some sort of children’s festival going on and a drumline was performing. i LOVE drumlines and this group was really cool. we hung out until they left and then decided to walk back.

we walked past a thai festival in front of the picasso sculpture. we bought a couple of souvenirs. in the distance we could see the joffrey ballet. it was pretty cool since we could see them dancing in a big glass window on the top floor. then it was time to head back to the metro. wow is that a long ride back to mrs. busby’s apartment.

she came back to the apartment after work not long after we got there. we had been goofing around with her pictures on the wall and it was hilarious when she noticed. let’s just say that i’m a tiny bit obsessive compulsive about pictures being straight. so i walked around her apartment and straightened the crooked pictures. michael made fun of me and put one whole wall askew. goofball!

around 3.30 or 4.00, we headed to stacy’s house in kenosha. it takes about an hour to get there. kaity and i rode with mrs. busby and the boys all rode with mr. busby. it was a nice ride. aiden and kaleb were waiting in front of the window when we got there….so cute!

stacy’s house hasn’t changed much but they remodeled their downstairs bathroom and it looks great! we hung out for awhile chatting and the boys playing.

we had said all week that we wanted to go to red lobster so when a dinner idea came up, we mentioned that. i mentioned it in the car and back when we were still in bradley. we were really looking forward to red lobster after a year! it turns out that there isn’t one in kenosha but there is one in gurnee which is like 20 minutes away. apparently that was too much effort so michael said ok…tell us where you guys would like to go then. his mom then said well it’s up to you. argh! we already said what we wanted…red lobster! so they suggested texas roadhouse. stacy called to do a phone seating. we’re supposed to put our name on the seating list and then it would go faster. well, apparently when we got there, they hadn’t put our name on the list. double argh! so we waited about 30 minutes before we were seated. it didn’t seem like any of the adults were in a great mood so, so much for a great family dinner. at least the boys had fun together though.

after the dinner we went back to stacy’s and talked for a bit more. all of the sudden, we see mr. busby in the hallway putting on his coat and shoes. mrs. busby then says, i guess it’s time to go. so we’re on our way again. another hour to chicago and then two more to bradley. by peotone, i couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore. what an exhausting day!
